Privacy Policy

This policy explains what data showmyipaddress.io ("we", "us") collects when you use the site, what we do with it, and your rights regarding it. We're privacy-respecting by design — most of this policy describes what we don't do.

Short version

  • We don't store your IP address after the lookup completes.
  • We don't sell visitor data — to anyone, ever.
  • We use two analytics tools: Plausible (privacy-focused, no cookies) and Google Analytics 4 (sets cookies, sends usage data to Google). See the Analytics and Cookies sections below.
  • We show ads served by Google AdSense to help keep the tools free. AdSense can set cookies and use them for ad personalization — see the Advertising section below for what that means and how to opt out.
  • Some features query third-party APIs (geolocation, DNS, RDAP) on your behalf — only the IP or hostname being looked up is sent; no personal identifiers are forwarded.

What we collect

Your IP address

To show you your IP and network info on the homepage and tools, our server reads the IP attached to your incoming HTTP request and queries a geolocation provider with it. The provider response is rendered to you and discarded. We do not log your IP to disk beyond standard short-retention server access logs.

User-Agent header

Your browser includes a User-Agent header in every request. We parse it server-side to detect your browser and operating system for the homepage display. The header is not stored.

Server access logs

Our hosting provider (Vercel) logs standard HTTP request data — IP, timestamp, requested URL, User-Agent, response code — for short retention periods (typically 7–30 days) for abuse prevention, performance monitoring, and security incident response. These logs are not joined to other identifiers, are not used for advertising, and are not shared with third parties.

Tool inputs

When you submit an IP, hostname, or other input to our tools, that input is forwarded to the relevant external service (e.g. ipapi.co for geolocation, Cloudflare DoH for DNS, rdap.org for WHOIS). We don't separately log or retain the inputs.

Theme preference

When you toggle dark mode, we store your preference in your browser's localStorage. This data never leaves your device.

Cookies

We do not set any first-party cookies ourselves. However, Google Analytics 4 and Google AdSense (both described below) set third-party cookies in your browser:

  • _ga — a unique visitor identifier used to distinguish users across sessions (2-year expiry, set by Google Analytics 4).
  • _ga_<CONTAINER_ID> — used to persist session state for the specific GA4 property (2-year expiry, set by Google Analytics 4).
  • Google AdSense sets its own cookies (such as __gads and __gpi) used for ad delivery, frequency capping, and — unless you've opted out — personalization based on your browsing activity.

You can disable these cookies by using a browser extension that blocks Google's tracking and advertising scripts (uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger), enabling "Do Not Track" in a browser that respects it, using a browser that blocks third-party cookies by default (Brave, Safari, hardened Firefox), or opting out of ad personalization directly at Google Ads Settings. Plausible does not set any cookies.

Analytics

We use two analytics tools, side-by-side:

Plausible Analytics

Plausible is a privacy-focused analytics provider that does not use cookies, does not collect personal data, does not track users across sites, and is GDPR / CCPA / PECR compliant by design. The data collected is page views, referring URLs, country (derived from IP — IP is not stored), browser, OS, and screen size — all aggregated and anonymized.

Google Analytics 4

We also use Google Analytics 4 (gtag.js) to measure detailed site usage. GA4 sets cookies in your browser, sends pageview and event data to Google, and may combine that data with other Google services per Google's privacy policy. The data collected includes page views, referring URLs, approximate location (derived from IP — IP itself is not stored long-term by GA4 in most configurations), device and browser information, and behavioral events (clicks, scrolls, session durations).

GA4 anonymizes IP addresses by default and does not log them past collection. You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking on this and other sites via the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, or by blocking the <script> src googletagmanager.com with an ad-blocker.

Advertising

We show ads served by Google AdSense to help cover hosting costs and keep the tools free. AdSense loads on every page and may use cookies (see the Cookies section above) to serve ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure ad performance, and — depending on your settings and location — personalize ads based on your browsing activity across sites.

We do not control which specific ads are shown or what Google does with the data it collects through AdSense; that's governed by Google's privacy policy. You can view and adjust your ad personalization settings, or opt out of personalized ads from Google entirely, at Google Ads Settings. Opting out means you'll still see ads — just not ones based on your activity.

Third-party services

We query the following providers as needed to fulfill tool requests:

  • ipapi.co — IP geolocation lookups. We send only the IP address being looked up. Their privacy policy.
  • ipwho.is — fallback IP geolocation. We send only the IP address being looked up.
  • cloudflare-dns.com — DNS over HTTPS for hostname and blacklist lookups. We send only the hostname being resolved. Cloudflare privacy policy.
  • rdap.org — WHOIS / RDAP lookups for IPs, ASNs, and domains.
  • speed.cloudflare.com — endpoints used by our speed test. Test data is exchanged directly between your browser and Cloudflare; we don't see the throughput numbers.
  • plausible.io — privacy-focused analytics, as described above.
  • googletagmanager.com / google-analytics.com — Google Analytics 4. Loaded on every page; sends pageview and event data and sets tracking cookies in your browser.
  • googlesyndication.com — Google AdSense. Loaded on every page; serves ads and may set cookies as described in the Advertising section above.

Each of these services has its own privacy policy. For tool-related lookups (ipapi.co, ipwho.is, cloudflare-dns.com, rdap.org, speed.cloudflare.com), the only data we forward is the IP, hostname, or domain being looked up — never a user identifier we could associate with you. Analytics providers receive standard web analytics data automatically when the script loads in your browser.

Children's privacy

The site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your rights

Because we don't retain personally identifying information, there is generally nothing for us to delete or export. If you're in the EU, UK, California, or another jurisdiction with applicable data rights, you can email us via the contact page and we'll respond within the legal timeframe.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS. We don't store user accounts, passwords, or payment information.

Changes

We may update this policy occasionally. Material changes will be announced on this page with the "Last updated" date refreshed.
