  • A free tier explicitly positioned as a trial or lite version of a paid product, from a company whose main business is the paid subscription.

The tell for a legitimate free tier: the limitation is something inconvenient (speed, data cap, fewer server locations) rather than something invisible (logging, ad injection, data sales). If a company makes real money from paying customers, they don't need to also monetize the free tier's data.
